White, Fuzzy Mold on Walls or Ceilings: how to Tackle It

Anyone who suddenly sees white, fluffy spots appearing on walls or ceilings is probably alarmed. Yet it’s a common phenomenon in Flemish homes. It looks like a type of mold that spreads rapidly and forms unsightly stains on the walls.

But what many don’t know: that so-called “white mold” is actually not real mold, but a clear symptom of an underlying moisture problem.

What is that White, Fluffy Deposit Actually?

The white, hairy layer you see is not mold, but saltpeter. It’s a substance that forms through a chemical reaction between moisture in the wall and certain minerals in the building material.

As soon as groundwater or rainwater moves through the walls, those salts dissolve in that water. When the moisture evaporates at the surface, the white crystals remain in the form of a powdery, hairy layer.

Although saltpeter itself is not living mold, it does serve the same role as an alarm signal: your walls are dealing with moisture and that problem needs to be addressed.

How Do You Recognize White Saltpeter Deposits?

It’s important to distinguish saltpeter deposits from ordinary mold, so you know which treatment is needed.

  • Color and texture: it looks like a white, fluffy or powdery layer that spreads across the wall.
  • Location: often on walls that are in contact with the ground or along exterior walls, but also around windows and basements.
  • Spread: the deposit can expand quite quickly, especially with persistent moisture.
  • Difference from real mold: where black mold appears slimy or blotchy, white saltpeter has a granular, crystal-like structure.

Possible Causes of White, Hairy Deposits

The appearance of saltpeter deposits means that moisture is penetrating. But where does that moisture come from?

Rising Damp

The most common cause is rising groundwater. When the water barrier in the walls is damaged or deteriorated, groundwater can slowly penetrate the wall and creep upward. You often see this problem in basements or on the ground floor, on the bottom meter and a half of the wall.

If you’re dealing with saltpeter, rising moisture is probably at the root of the problem. The minerals that end up in the walls along with that groundwater cause the chemical reaction.

Penetrating Moisture through the Facade

A facade that has lost its protective function allows rainwater through. Older bricks become porous and joints can crack or crumble.

The result: water penetrates and causes moisture spots, on which saltpeter can form.

How Do You Remove White Deposits from the Wall?

Our Experts’ Treatment Proceeds in Two Steps:

Step 1: surface cleaning
The white crystals are removed from the wall with a brush or cleaning agent. This is only a cosmetic step. We remove the visible deposit, but don’t solve the cause yet. If you do nothing more than brush it off, the deposit will return after a few weeks or months.

Step 2: addressing the cause
To solve the problem permanently, the moisture must be stopped. The right method depends on the source:

  • Rising damp? We inject the walls with a moisture-repelling agent. This creates a new water barrier that prevents ground moisture from rising up.
  • Penetrating damp through the facade? Then facade impregnation or facade renovation is required. We make the exterior wall water-repellent again with a specially developed product.
  • Moisture through basement walls? Basement waterproofing is then required, so that groundwater no longer has a chance to penetrate.
  • Leaks? Then you need to repair those defective pipes, gutters or window frames.
