What Exactly are Wall Salts?<\/h2>\n

Wall salts, also called hygroscopic salts or saltpeter, are white deposits that appear on walls<\/strong>. Usually in the lower five feet. They don’t just appear out of nowhere. These salts are carried to the surface of the wall by moisture that penetrates the wall. <\/p>\n

How does this happen?<\/strong> Salts are naturally present in the soil or in the masonry itself. When moisture dissolves these salts and carries them through the capillary action of the bricks, they’re transported to the surface of your wall. There the water evaporates and the salts remain on the wall as a white haze or granular deposit. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Rising Damp: the Main Suspect<\/h3>\n

In most cases, wall salts are related to<\/strong> rising damp<\/a>. Especially in older homes, there’s often a lack of proper waterproofing at the bottom of the walls. This allows groundwater to slowly rise through the pores of the bricks<\/strong>. This groundwater contains dissolved salts such as nitrates and chlorides.
