The Basement Needs Ventilation<\/h2>\n

A room without windows has an extra need for ventilation. It’s just not easy to get such a space naturally ventilated. <\/p>\n

Because basements usually don’t have windows, the same air stays there. This is not harmless. The humidity rises quickly. There’s more water vapor in the air and it has nowhere to go. When all that water vapor comes into contact with the cold walls and ceilings of the basement, condensation occurs. The water vapor then returns to its liquid state, resulting in small water droplets hanging on the walls and ceiling. This water penetrates the plaster and building materials, resulting in damp spots. Very often this problem is accompanied by mold or even cellar fungi. So the basement absolutely needs ventilation. <\/p>\n

When you ventilate the basement, that water-rich air is replaced by dry outside air. No more condensation can form then.<\/p>\n

How Can You Ventilate a Basement without Windows?<\/h2>\n

To prevent a damp basement due to condensation, you need to ventilate the basement sufficiently. The fact that most basements don’t have windows naturally complicates the situation. Fortunately, you don’t have to look too far for the solution. A mechanical ventilation system easily takes over the job. This way, moist air is expelled outside and fresh air comes in.<\/p>\n

What Types of Ventilation Systems are there to Ventilate the Basement?<\/h2>\n

Mechanical ventilation systems come in all shapes and sizes and there are many different brands that offer ventilation systems. They can be divided into three categories (B, C and D – where A stands for natural ventilation). Nowadays, only systems C and D are installed. <\/p>\n

With ventilation system C, the air is supplied naturally and expelled mechanically. In practice, you see small vents attached to the windows or walls. This is how the air comes in. There is also a ventilation shaft with a fan that sucks the air out. This way, the water vapor disappears from the air and no condensation can form in the basement. <\/p>\n

The disadvantage of ventilation system C is that the incoming air is not heated. In winter, this can create an unpleasant feeling in certain cases. You won’t notice much difference on your energy bill though, because dry air warms up much faster than air saturated with moisture. <\/p>\n

The most complex ventilation systems are those of type D. Here, the air is mechanically supplied and expelled through vents. The big advantage is that the air is preheated with the heat from the expelled air. This heat recovery system keeps the type D ventilation system economical and green. With ventilation system D, you also don’t have any noise nuisance from outside and filters can be added that filter out pollen, for example.<\/p>\n
