What is the Cost of Basement Waterproofing or Basement Drainage?

Vocht in de kelder

Dealing with moisture in the basement? Basement waterproofing, from the inside or outside, or basement drainage can help you out. These are particularly efficient ways to make a damp basement usable again as before.

But what is the cost of basement waterproofing or basement drainage? You’ll find out in this article.

Basement Waterproofing from the Inside

The most common way to dry out damp basements is waterproofing from the inside. Your basement is then made waterproof again using several layers of a water-repellent paste. Fixing layers are applied between these different layers. This creates a sturdy, water-repellent lining that shields your basement from the damp subsoil.

In professional jargon, we also call this a rigid lining. We essentially create new basement walls and a new basement floor. So you’re essentially walking in a new basement, a tub.

For very damp basements, a flexible lining is recommended. Our professionals then apply a water-repellent foil to the basement walls and floor. This foil has the same effect as the rigid basement lining and prevents water from entering. Afterwards, a new basement floor must be poured and we build new basement walls. It’s a very efficient solution; you essentially get a new basement.

Costs of Basement Waterproofing

How much you pay for basement waterproofing or basement lining depends on how bad the basement’s condition is and, of course, the size of the basement.

If a rigid lining suffices, you can expect a starting price of around 4000 euros. The larger the basement, the more water-repellent material we need and the higher the cost of the basement lining will be.

If your basement is in poor condition, a flexible lining will be necessary. You pay more for this because it’s essentially building a new basement. You’ll pay up to 10,000 euros for a flexible basement lining. But for that, you get a completely new basement in return.

It’s therefore difficult to put an exact price on basement waterproofing. That’s why we prefer to first visit you to make a diagnosis, choose the appropriate treatment, and be able to prepare a quote.

Basement Drainage: for Very Damp Basements

When water is standing in the basement, basement drainage might be a better solution. We then ensure that the seeping water is continuously drained. This can be done in various ways.

For example, there’s perimeter drainage. A gutter of waterproof cement is then built at the location of the cove joint. This is the place where the basement walls and floor meet, it’s the Achilles’ heel of the basement.

However, we usually opt for floor drainage. We then apply a special dimpled membrane to the basement floor that’s connected to a pump system. The intruding water is continuously pumped out. This happens via pipes in the floor and walls of the basement. The membrane is of course covered so that you can use the basement again as before.

Costs of Basement Drainage

Basement drainage can be somewhat cheaper than basement waterproofing. For an average basement, you pay around 3000 euros. If the basement is in poor condition, wall drainage may be needed in addition to floor drainage. You’ll then pay considerably more. This also applies to large basements.

What’s Better: Basement Waterproofing or Basement Drainage?

The answer to that question is different for every basement. The advantage of basement lining is that you seal off the basement from incoming groundwater. Water no longer enters the basement. This is preferred because it greatly reduces the humidity in the basement. And that’s positive because it prevents the formation of mold and basement fungi.

However, basement drainage is necessary when the groundwater pressure is too high. In that case, basement lining might not be able to withstand the water in the subsoil. The disadvantage of basement drainage is that the humidity will still remain high. The advantage, however, is that the starting prices of basement drainage systems are lower than those of basement waterproofing.

Tip: Preventive Basement Sealing from the Outside

Are you planning to build a new house? Then it’s a good idea to provide preventive basement sealing from the outside . A water-repellent layer is applied that makes it impossible for moisture to penetrate from the outside. This prevents typical moisture problems in the basement years later. The disadvantage of basement sealing from the outside is the price tag.
